Why We Made Trail Magik

We’ve been taking our 3 kids on outdoor adventures since they were babies. When our oldest son outgrew the backpack carrier, we realized we had a problem: Gus could only hike a mile or two on his own, which meant most of our favorite destinations were out of reach. There was no kid carrier on the market for those “in between years” — when little hikers are done with traditional carriers but still need to rest frequently on the trail.

Trail Magik was born from our own family’s need, and we spent years hiking with our hand-sewn prototype. When enough friends begged us to make one for them, we realized our little idea could help more families than just our own. Fast forward to today, and thousands of active families are continuing the adventures they love with Trail Magik.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What age and size of kid is Trail Magik best for?

Trail Magik is for kids age 1 year+, and up to 43lbs.

I already have a backpack kid carrier. Why would I need a Trail Magik?

Gear is a highly personal decision, and there’s lots of great options out there! Here’s why we created Trail Magik:

Keeps Kids Hiking: Backpack kid carriers often keep kids off the trail, since loading and unloading can be a pain. We wanted our little hikers to gain experience and strength hiking for as long as they’re able, with an easy on/off option to rest while being carried. We all want self-sufficient kid hikers, and Trail Magik is a great tool to help kids get there.

10x Lighter: Backpack kid carriers add a ton of weight to your setup, averaging over 7lbs—before your kid is in it! Trail Magik weighs only 9.8oz, which is 10x less weight.

A Fraction of The Cost: New backpack kid carriers start at over $300, which is a substantial investment in a piece of gear that may only last a season or two. Trail Magik is only $95 (one third the cost) and is commonly used by our customers for multiple years and seasons per child. Our durable construction means it can be passed down to siblings for years to come.

Multi Use: Backpack kid carriers are so bulky, you generally only want to use them on a hike. Trail Magik unlocks flexibility to carry your little one in any setting, from the beach to the chair lift queue to the farmer’s market to the hiking trail. Some of our customers even bring their Trail Magik to Disneyland!

Maximizes Capacity: Backpack kid carriers significantly reduce the adult’s capacity for carrying other essential gear, food and water on their back. For active families attempting substantial trips, a backpack kid carrier is simply not an option. Trail Magik makes these trips possible by creating a comfortable way to carry little hikers without robbing space for other gear.

Essential for Emergencies: No parent wants to be caught unprepared for an emergency, especially in a remote location. Backpack kid carriers are far too bulky to bring along simply for emergency purposes. Trail Magik is a piece of lightweight gear that can fit in your backpack’s brain or water bottle pouch, that will give you peace of mind in case you need to carry your child for any reason.

What kind of backpack do I need with my Trail Magik? Can I wear the Trail Magik Kid Carrier on its own?

The Trail Magik cannot be worn on its own. The Trail Magik Kid Carrier is an attachment that is designed to clip onto a 30 Liter or greater hiking backpack with a robust hipbelt & “load lifter” webbing on the shoulder straps. Our customers use their Trail Magiks with a variety of brands and types of backpacks; however a robust hip belt and “load lifter” webbing on the shoulder straps is required.

Please check the integrity of your backpack first for any where and tear before using it with a Trail Magik.

Is the Trail Magik Kid Carrier safe? Has it had safety testing done on it?

Yes! The Trail Magik Kid Carrier complies with all US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)  safety standards. To achieve our certification and ensure safety and reliability, we collaborated directly with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, undergoing extensive testing on various backpacks and confirming our carrier’s suitability for children aged 12 months and older. Committed to the highest standards, we adhered to all safety regulations, including static/dynamic weight testing, flammability testing, and securing necessary certifications, to provide our adventure community with a dependable and innovative product.

TheTrail Magik really saved me 4th of July Weekend!

TheTrail Magik really saved me 4th of July weekend as we foundourselves descending into a canyon to spend the day canoeing! We weren’t planning on much hiking but I decided to throw it in the camping pile last minute and I’m so glad that I did. Our short hike would have been way too steep for our 2.5 year old to hike, and I felt so much more safe being able to use my hands to safely move into the canyon. I can’t wait to try it out so we can finally gobackpacking with our toddler!

Its creative but not fully functional

I bought for my 3year old girl, she is the right weight for it.
The back of her legs where her weight rests got really red, I realized when she eventually complained about pain.
It was also really hard for me to see the trail while wearing it with her.

Fantastic design!

I love how it attached to our packs and my child sat well in it with a hip healthy position. My only gripe is that it didn’t breathe well so my kid got really sweaty each time she was carried in it which isn’t the best when you’re out in the backcountry. Otherwise, we love it!

Easy in, easy out for hiking kids

Overall: This carrier is as advertised: good for a kid who wants to walk a little and ride a little. So far I've tried it out with my 1.5-year-old, 28-lb friend on a 1.2-mile hike. It was easy to lift them in and out for snack breaks, toddling practice, playing in a stream, etc. I felt well balanced with toddler on the front and gear on my back (plus it's way easier to hand the kid crackers when they're on your front, as someone used to back carrying!).
Materials: Very sturdy. The buckles, webbing, and carabiners feel heavy duty to the point of overkill, but maybe I'm just used to lightweight gear.
Fit: I used the carrier with my Osprey Sportlite 30 daypack, and I haven't gotten the fit totally dialed in yet. If I have the kid high up on my body enough to feel comfortable for me, their legs are partially resting on the carrier and partially on the carabiners, which seems less than comfy for them on a longer hike. I am going to try attaching the carabiners to the sewn-in loops that hold the webbing of my pack's side compression straps next time, both to see if I can get the carrier up higher on my body and also to see if I can get more weight onto the hipbelt and off the shoulder straps.

I really wanted to love this carrier, but it is not good for much more than 10 minutes at a time. All the weight is on your shoulders, and I have chunky toddlers! Again, I really love the idea and I really wanted to like it, but it was a major back/shoulder pain after a short 20 minute hike.
